Cake Pops

Cake Pops


Ingredients:
Cake Mix (plus ingredients listed on the box) *I used Devils Food Cake Mix
8 oz of Frosting (this is 1/2 container of store bought frosting) I used CHOCOLATE :)
White Chocolate Candy Melts (2 bags) found at Walmart but also at Joanns or Michaels
Candy Sticks (Joanns, Michaels, or Walmart)
Styrofoam (Dollar Store)
Gel Food Coloring (NOT liquid or it will harden your candy melt)

Step 1.  Bake your cake mix according to instructions on the back of the box.  Allow to cool completely.

Step 2.  Crumble cake into bowl, add 8 oz of Frosting and mix together until cake is moistened enough to form one large ball and keep it's shape.

Step 3.  Form cake into 1 inch balls using the palms of your hands.  You should be able to get about 40 balls.  Place them on a large cookie sheet.

Step 4.  Melt about 1/2 cup of your candy melt following the instructions on the back of package.  Get your candy sticks and dip the candy stick into the candy melt one inch and then push it into the cake ball.  Continue with all of the cake balls and then place the sheet of cake balls into the refrigerator for about 3o minutes to help the sticks stay in the cake balls.

Step 5.  Melt the remainder of your first bag of candy melt. ( *It's really up to you how much candy melt you are comfortable working with, just remember you have to work pretty quickly to keep the candy melt from hardening.)  Take your cake balls and dip them sideways into the candy melt.  Spoon the candy melt over the top of the cake ball until completely coverered.  Pull out of the candy melt and tap gently on the side of your bowl to allow any drips to fall.  Place cake pop into the styrofoam to cool and harden.  (You should have your holes already punctured in your styrofoam to save time).  Continue until all your cake pops are dipped, melt more candy melt as needed; you can also reheat your candy melt, just follow instructions on package and be careful not to burn it.

Step 6.  This is where you can get creative.  If you are using White Candy Melt you can use food coloring to make different colored candy melt, or you can just buy the color of candy melt you would like as they have several different colors to choose from.  If you do choose to use food coloring be sure it is the gel food coloring as the liquid coloring will cause your candy melt to harden immediately.  You can decorate your cake pops by drizzling colored candy melt on top like I did, or if you want to keep it simple, just dip the tops of the cake pops in a bowl of sprinkles right after it comes out of your candy melt.   

-To drizzle frosting over the tops of the cake pop:  Melt candy melt(add food coloring if needed) and spoon candy melt into ziploc bag.  Cut small hole out of the corner of the bag and drizzle frosting over cake pop as desired.

Step 7.  Allow to cool (I think they taste better after chilling in the fridge for a bit) and then you are ready to serve them or package them up as a gift.  I found these treat bags at the Dollar Store, tied them with twine and gave the Cake Pops away as Party Favors at a Baby Shower.  They were a huge hit!

If you decide to make these for your family and have leftovers, dont worry, you can freeze them, in fact I think they taste the BEST straight from the freezer.
