Pigs in a Blanket

A favorite choice for dinner when I had lots of kiddos under foot was
Pigs in  a Blanket.
I loved to fix them, and they loved to eat them.

With no little ones left at home, I rarely make them anymore, but decided to pull out the recipe when a few of my grandkids came for a visit. They were wide eyed with wonder at the sheer name of what grandma was fixin' for dinner and their Daddy squealed with delight as he realized he hadn't had this tasty dinner since he was a child.

There actually is no formal recipe. Simply use your favorite bread dough recipe along with your favorite hot dog or sausage.

Take your sausage or hotdogs from refrigerator and allow to come to room temperature.

Prepare your bread dough.

Cut the hot dogs in half. I prefer to use smoked sausage, or an all beef hot dog.

Using a piece of dough a little bigger than a golf ball, flatten it in your hand and form it around the sausage, carefully covering it completely.

Place each on a greased baking sheet an inch apart.

Allow to raise for 30 minutes in a warm place.

Place into preheated oven (375°) and bake until golden brown.

Serve with french fries and a tossed salad.

*The leftovers freeze well and can be reheated in the microwave. Wrap the thawed piggie in a paper towel and cook for 30-60 seconds on high.  A great home from school snack!

  1. These are dearly loved at our house too. Always a kid- pleaser! I like to cut my hot dogs in half lengthwise. I like the proportion of bun-to-hot-dog better this way! And we always dip ours in fry sauce!!! http://www.deseretnews.com/article/650220850/My-oh-my-do-we-love-fry-sauce.html

  3. I forgot that you always chose these for your birthday meal when you were little, Kathryn. Macaroni and Cheese was always the side dish then... because that was your favorite, too!

  4. I made these for my first time tonight, Ben was so skeptical when I brought them to the table, but he liked them, so did Norah. Can't go wrong with hot dogs :)

    1. I can just imagine the look on Ben's face... I miss that guy. Maybe you should try putting sloppy joe mix inside. :)
